Frequently Asked Questions

The time is wrong! How do I set the time?
ProdMe is not a clock. The time that's shown is the time when the next chime will sound, not the current time. The time is calculated relative to your Mac's clock, so there is no need to adjust for your time zone, Daylight Savings Time, etc.

Why isn't it a clock? Why not just show the current time?
There are already many, many clock widgets and applications available for Mac OS X, not to mention Apple's own World Clock widget and the menu bar clock. I felt it would be far more useful to display information related to ProdMe's actual function.

I use a 24-hour clock on my Mac, but I can't set an hour greater than 12 for the alarm clock on ProdMe. What gives?
This is a bug that existed in version 0.7b, but has since been fixed. Download and install the latest version of ProdMe. (Sorry it took so long for me to fix this!)

ProdMe has started behaving oddly! How can I fix it?
If ProdMe was working fine for you for a while, but is now acting strange, try closing the widget and deleting its preferences file. This file is located in the Preferences folder within your Library folder, and is named widget-com.cruftforce7.widget.ProdMe.plist. If that doesn't work, close the widget, delete the preferences file again, restart your computer, then reinstall ProdMe from scratch.

Can I customize the chime sounds?
Yes. If you have a sound file that you'd like to use, just copy it to the Sounds folder within your Library folder, and the next time you flip ProdMe over to change the settings, your sound will be listed in the Sound menu. At the moment, ProdMe can use .MP3, .M4A, .AIFF, and .WAV files.

What does ProdMe cost?
Nothing!

Can I make a donation anyway?
Absolutely! Just click on the "tip jar" on the left of this page, which will take you to a form where you can send a tip via either PayPal or a major credit card. (If you can't decide how much to send, I'll be bold here and suggest that $4 would be nice.) I am still astonished and delighted that people ask me about this.

Is there a user's guide?
Not yet, but I am working on it. I hope to keep ProdMe as straightforward to use as possible, but I understand that not all of the features are obvious.

I am making a widget of my own, and I'd like to borrow some of ProdMe's source code. Is that okay?
Go right ahead. If you do use some of my code, I'd appreciate a credit in either the "About..." text or the source code of your widget; it would also be nifty if you'd drop me a note telling me about your widget, but you don't have to. There are two limitations: First, if you want to use my code for commercial purposes of any kind, contact me so that we can work out licensing arrangements. Second, please don't make a wholesale copy of ProdMe and just slap different interface graphics on it. I intend to make this a proper open-source project when I feel that the code base has stabilized, so you'll be allowed to make your own fork at that time if you want to.

Why haven't you responded to my email?
Sorry! I'd love to be better about this, but I am currently in graduate school (in addition to holding down a regular job) and I have very little time right now to answer support requests. By necessity, answering email about ProdMe is very low on my list of priorities.

Who's responsible for all this?
Just one person at the moment, and for the foreseeable future. I work as a software engineer for TerraSpark Geosciences, and am currently a doctoral student at the University of Colorado at Boulder. My personal home page is at http://cruftforce7.com/jim/, if you're curious.
