In some ways, I really like this sculpture, but in most respects I think it's pretty lame. This was another one of my efforts from college, created for an assignment where we had to combine wood laminate elements with carved concrete.
The lame part is the concept, or rather, how the sculpture completely fails to express the concept. My idea was to give the impression that the concrete was being bent by the pressure of the wooden structure behind it, which in turn was coming "unraveled" from the force that it was exerting. The end result was totally blah; it just sits there, looking unconvincing. I should have done more maquettes in advance of fleshing this out.
The part that I like is the technical quality of the sculpture. As far as I can remember, this piece of concrete was the first 3D object that I had ever carved in my life, and it turned out really nicely. Granted, it's not an especially complex shape, but it is smooth and of even thickness, and the contours accurately reflect how a flat slab of a material like clay would distort if bent into that position. The wood laminate bits also worked out fairly well. For a first attempt at both of these techniques, it doesn't suck. |
