the saddle

I made this at a flute carving seminar that was taught by a friend during a lengthy camping trip in Utah. It is in the style of Native American courting flutes (in terms of general construction, at least), and I should also point out that it was made from a kit, not from scratch.

There are a couple reasons why I chose to carve the saddle in the shape of a finger. The first reason is that these saddles are often (usually?) carved in the shape of an animal of some sort, and at the time I couldn't decide which critter to choose. Then I got to thinking, "Hey, I bet nobody ever does body parts!" The second reason, and the reason for the finger as opposed to some other body part, has to do with an in-joke that I couldn't possibly explain here.

This flute is still work in progress, in a sense. Now that I've had it for a while, I think the body of the flute is kind of boring, and I'd like to carve some sort of designs into it. Haven't had any good ideas for that yet, though.
