I made this ring over the course of the summer of 1995, thanks to the instruction of a friend who was a professional jeweler. It was first carved from hard wax, then cast in sterling silver.

Unlike most of my artwork, I had a specific concept in mind for the design of this ring. It is sort of an interpretation of yin and yang: a metal thorn pierces a vine, which in turn entwines the thorn at the opposite end. Both elements can be seen as conflicting, or as supporting one another. To me, it represents the presence of duality in many aspects of my life.

You can probably see that the ring is pretty tarnished and scuffed up by now. I used to get it properly polished once every year or so, but I eventually came to the conclusion that it looks better when it's not buffed to a mirror-like sheen. It's a big, knobbly ring, and the rougher look suits it.
